Project
:
Concurrency, Petri Nets, and Distributed Systems
Duration:
since
1994
Keywords:
Concurrency,
Petri nets,
nets-within-nets,
object nets,
structural analysis,
RENEW
Objectives:
Today, information systems provide their services via communicating and cooperating processes.
For the analysis and design of such systems Petri nets are an established means.
The design and anlysis of such formalisms is one of the major research contribution
to the international scientific community.
This project is dedicated to the concurreny theory in general and the
theorey of Petri nets in special. The research agenda reaches from the axiomatic concurrency theory to
the RENEW tool support.
Additionally, the group maintains the internatial Petri net bibliography
and the official web portal of the Petri net community.
A main focus of the TGI group is the study of object nets
which are Petri nets with nets as tokens.
This nesting of activity leads to a much richer structure when compared to elementary nets.
The formalism of object nets gives fundamental insights for the design of
open or mobile systems.
The theoretical results are used to develop and improve
the formal theory of component- and agent-based systems.
Here, we study the structural analysis of object nets
as well as the complexity of model checking approaches.
The theoretical results are implemented within the java-based
Petri net toll, named RENEW. RENEW is one of the well established tools
for the modelling and simulation of Petri nets which is also
succesfully used for educational purposes, like e.g. class room projects.
