Project
:
Organizations and business processes
Duration:
since
1999
Keywords:
Organisation, organisation theory,
socionics, sociology, self-organisation, adaptation,
business processes, web engineering, workflows,
multi-agent systems, Petri nets, nets within nets
Objectives:
A major task of informatics is the support and enabling
of a socio-technical coupling of systems, and the integration of technical as well
social aspects within the system' design.
Here, the concept of organisations plays the key role.
On the one hand they are the most fundamental application domain for
information technology embedded within a social environment.
On the other hand organisations are per definition a socio-technical construct,
as they combine the formal parts of the organisation (positions, roles, rules etc.)
with the informal, human part.
In this sense organisations are not only an important application domain,
but also the main inspiration for models and metaphors of socio-tecnical coupling.
Especially for the development of software systems the metaphor of the organisation
establishes itself as a theory concept in its own rights.
In this research area we study organisation theory as well as sociological
and econimic theory to develop models which reflect the expressed concepts and processes.
We use high-level Petri nets as our main modelling framework.
The sub-projects are devoted to specific aspects, like the interplay of organisational units,
the formal specification of institutions, the micro-macro link,
and the self-organisation of business processes.
With respect to the software technical aspects we develop
appropriate modelling languages that allow the direct use
of rthe theoretical conceots in the domain
of multi-agent or workflow systems.
They are intended to support the declarative programming of
distributed systems with the special focus on self-organisation
based on a meta representation of the system itself.
