Abstract: This paper addresses the problem of adequate modeling of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) with Petri nets. Advantages and disadvantages of uncolored and colored approaches are shown with an application example. Starting from these considerations, we define a formalism which is especially tailored for the modeling of flexible manufacturing systems. With the method proposed in the paper, we intend to combine the profitable properties of both colored and uncolored Petri nets. This is done by the predefinition of color sets for the modeling of parts and resource states of the FMS. Finally, the application of the modeling formalism to a manufacturing system example shows the usefulness of our approach.
