Abstract: One of the challenges of interconnecting LANs with ATM based B-ISDN is that most LANs work in connectionless way and have the nature of bursty traffic; However, ATM network provides connection oriented services. This paper is concerned with performance analysis of a connection management scheme in the Interworking Units (IWUs) interconnecting LANs across ATM networks. Delayed release of established VC is modeled using stochastic Petri nets to explicitly capture the correlative characteristic of bursty traffic. The result shows that there is a tradeoff between effective use of the bandwidth and the signaling overhead caused by connection setup and release, which help us to design and configure the IWUs.
