Abstract: Interactions occurring in living cells between populations of macromolecules are now sufficiently understood to model them with some level of realism. Here, the structure and dynamics of these models is reviewed, and a number of open problems are discussed. Recent applications of such models indicate that there is a growing need for simulation environments specifically designed for the life sciences.
