Abstract: We claim that building a model of a system is a cognitive activity which requires to have clear ideas about what a system is and what modeling consists in. This paper proposes a conceptual framework allowing to clarify the relationships between a system and its models, and thus to guide modeling processes. Then, this framework is illustrated using the CoOperative Objects formalism which is based upon the Petri net theory and the Object-Oriented approach.
