Abstract: To support the cooperative development of computer-supported work one needs a language for communication and modelling. Role/function/action-nets (RFA-nets) provide a visual language framework designed for this purpose. It covers a broad range of aspects and allows to describe human-machine systems from various perspectives and on many levels of detail. This paper gives a survey of the notions and graphic representations of RFA-nets, illustrates them by examples and presents some of the rationale behind them.

Keywords: role function action net (as) visual language (for) cooperative modelling; human-machine system; graphic representation.
