Abstract: This paper deals with a scheduling problem of a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) based on a knowledge engineering approach, where we consider scheduling objectives to minimize completion time and to reduce the number of set-up. To cope with the computational complexity of scheduling problems, the authors apply a simulation method using a timed Petri net, where FMS is modeled as a discrete event system.
