Abstract: An automation environment is presented that can be used to support permanently the entire life cycle of a complex production system from the planning and projecting phase up to the runtime of the plant. The uniform and consistent data structure of Petri nets allow their application for modeling, simulation, control, and diagnosis. An important condition is the combination of transitions with a time component. The capability of a neutral structure of Petri nets as well as a comfortable graphical interactive user surface make tools developed within the project suitable for a large number of applications in manufacturing.
