Abstract: This paper examines a production line composed of multiple stages, or cells, which are passed in a sequential order to arrive to the final product. Two possible coordination disciplines are considered, namely: the classical tandem arrangement of sequential working centers with input buffer, and the kanban scheme. The production line is modelled and analysed by means of Stochastic Petri Nets. Finally, the authors include the possibility that the working cells can incur cycles of failures and repairs perturbing the production flow of the line, and they study the corresponding reduction in the performance indices.
