Abstract: Several types of man-made systems, such as manufacturing systems, data communications networks, and computational structures, are characterized mainly by the transitions that occur in them rather than by continuous flows of specific quantities. In the new economic conditions the importance of such systems cannot be overemphasized. Hence, their mathematical modeling, necessary for efficient and automated control and design, already has attracted significant attention and has great prospects for the near future. This paper aims at briefly reviewing all presently available techniques for accomplishing the modeling of discrete-event dynamic systems.
