Abstract: Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) have the potential for making manufacturing more cost-effective. However, for this potential to be fully realized the FMS must be capable of reacting to disturbances that might occur during its operation. This calls for a very flexible control architecture. This paper addresses the problem of developing such a control/simulation environment. A colored Petri net-based approach is developed for modelling the FMS. The model, automatically configured from the description of the FMS, can be used for simulation and control of the system.
