Abstract: The X-Windows-based UltraSAN software package employs stochastic activity networks (SANs), a variation of Petri nets, to model and analyze the performance and dependability of software, hardware and network system designs. SANs provide `performability' modeling that overcomes the inabilities of previous modeling methods to evaluate performance and dependability in one model and to handle large-size systems. Various methods combine performability variables with SAN structure to, respectively, reduce the size of the stochastic process required for analytical solutions and speed simulation solutions.
